I have heard a lot of names tossed around for who should win the Hart trophy this year. Lecavalier, Malkin, Alfredsson, and even Crosby, but none of them deserve this honour as much as Alexander Ovechkin.
Ovechkin has been on a torrid pace this year, ripping it up for 56 goals and 97 points this season. Ovechkin should easily make it to a 60 goal season, the likes of which has not been seen in over a decade. He is also on pace to become the first Russian to ever lead the NHL in points.
One of the more amazing things Ovechkin, is that he does not have other All-Star linemates feeding him the puck, which you would normally associate with great, prolific goal scoring. All other players who have been mentioned, have either other All-Star players to help, or an All-Star team to allow them to reach the level that they have gotten to. Ovechkin has a solid rookie center in Nicklas Backstrom, but the latter can not be considered an All-Star just yet.
Ovechkin has a real passion and enjoyment for the game that is unmatched. Whether it be a highlight goal or an empty netter, not one other player seems to have as much fun and love for the game as the Russian does.
I believe that Ovechkin will win the Hart trophy this year even though it is doubtful that the Capitals will make the playoffs. Clearly, he will be a force to reckon with for years to come.
