It was released early this week that Nick Holt, the former defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies, was hired on staff at Arkansas, in some capacity. Well, the AP wire, by way of CBS Sports, informed us that Holt is indeed with the Razorbacks as the director of on-campus recruiting, the same position once held by by Bobby Petrino's mistress until the scandal that ended with her departure and the head coach's dismissal.

For some folks, the hire of the former USC assistant and BCS level defensive coordinator at the position held by Jessica Dorrell raised a red flag about Petrino making a fraudulent hire. As CBS Sports Gregg Doyel' points out:

How bogus was Petrino's hire of his mistress? She's replaced by an ex-USC def coordinator:

Maybe. There were likely better candidates out there than Dorrell, but her hire was not something that was absolutely bogus as some want to believe. In fact, Nick Holt is the one people should be looking at and scratching their heads, with respect to his hire.

Nick Holt is a guy that's had real jobs. He's been a head coach at Idaho, and a defensive coordinator at both USC and Washington. He's also coached defensive lines a couple stops along the way. This is a man with the type of resume that should get you hired somewhere, in an actual coaching capacity.

Except it didn't.

He got a job as a mid-level administrator for a coaching staff that is in limbo, and for a head coach who, bet you dollars to donuts, won't have the same job come January. That's the job Nick Holt has now.

Holt has essentially skipped all of the steps that come with professional tumbles: no job as a low BCS level defensive coordinator; no job as a non-BCS defensive coordinator; no job as a special teams coordinator; no job as a recruiting coordinator; no job as a position coach; no job coaching at all.

He's an admin now. It's not a bad job. I know on-campus recruiting coordinators, they like their job. It's stressful but they enjoy it. That said, it's not coaching football.

This is not about how bogus the Dorrell hire is, rather it is about how far that Alamo Bowl performance dropped Nick Holt's standing. After getting shredded by Baylor to the tune of 67 points, Holt's now off the coaching beat for the time being. That's quite the fall.

Hopefully, after this season, he can regain some of that cache he had built up.
