Chael Sonnen Moves to Light Heavyweight, Faces Forrest Griffin
Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE
Chael Sonnen is taking his talents to the UFC's light heavyweight division.
Sonnen, the former 2-time middleweight contender to Anderson Silva's title, announced on Tuesday's edition of UFC Tonight that he'll be moving up to 205 pounds. Sonnen also announced that he's facing Forrest Griffin on the UFC's end-of-year show, which takes place December 29th in Las Vegas.
Sonnen and Griffin are friends, but they also have a history inside the cage. Griffin defeated Sonnen by triangle choke on September 6, 2003 at IFC: Global Domination. Sonnen has mostly plied his trade at 185-pounds since then, but two championship fight losses have caused him to reconsider.
Sonnen also took shots at UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones during the broadcast. When asked about Nike's recent signing of Jones, Sonnen said that Nike "has a history of signing dorks."
It appears the "Mouth of the UFC" is getting his ducks in a row for a light heavyweight title run.
