Marty's Back! Martin Brodeur Returns to Devils' Lineup

JerseySenior Analyst IFebruary 25, 2009

According to Tom Gulliti, the Devils have activated Martin Brodeur from IR and have sent Scott Clemmensen back to Lowell. Brodeur says he will start tomorrow night, for the first time since the 10th game of the season.

This is exactly the right move. Kevin Weekes is a capable backup, and with his playoff experience he belongs on the roster. Clemmensen has been a savior to this point, but he should be getting ice time, and he won't get that with Brodeur back. He will have his starting gig back (in all likelihood) in the minors.

Moreover, Clemmensen was listed as an "emergency callup" when Brodeur got hurt. According to Lou Lamoriello, this means he could be sent to Lowell without having to first clear waivers, provided he was sent down as soon as Brodeur was activated. Had they chosen to keep him on the roster, he would have had to clear waivers should the Devils have decided to send him down.

The Devils will still probably try to trade Clemmensen, but I wonder if they will still be able to now that he's in the minors. I don't know the rules exactly, but I know he would have to clear re-entry waivers if recalled. But in a trade, he may be able to go from the minor league roster directly to another team's NHL roster. Unfortunately, like I said, I don't know the exact rule for this.

Regardless, it's not feasible to carry three goaltenders, and so Clemmensen's time is up. I hope he does well wherever he spends the remainder of the season.
