Nebraska Huskers Starting Pitching Outlook for 2009 Season

The beginning of the 2009 Nebraska Huskers baseball season will bring with it some big questions for the team's pitching. Gone are Johnny Dorn (106 innings), Thad Weber (79 innings), Dan Jennings (77 innings), and Aaron Pribanic (74 innings).

Returning pitchers have a total of eight starts, with Erik Bird tallying seven of those himself. The top returning pitcher in appearances is Mike Nesseth with 27, but he did not start a game.

Nesseth finished 4-1 with a 3.58 ERA and Bird finished 5-1 with a 4.05 ERA.

Who will be the third weekend starter? Who knows? Casey Hauptman (1-0 record and a 4.34 ERA in 2008), Michael Mariot (2-0 and a 6.75 ERA in 2008), Jordan Roualdes (transfer from South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College), Eric Rose (spent last two seasons injured), and Nate Kerhoff are among the possibilities.

For the Huskers' sake, hopefully some of these young, inexperience kids can step it up in 2009.

They have some big shoes to fill. Similar questions were being asked at the beginning of the 2008 season, except for Dorn of course, and they answered the call and overachieved before running out of gas down the stretch.

Time will tell if the coaches and kids have what it takes to surprise again, but this time finish strong.
