London 2012 has been filled with exciting moments, ranging from first-time gold winners to the end of an era in which history was made.

Team USA found itself back on top in gold medals after falling short to China in Beijing 2008, and Great Britain won the most gold medals in its history since 1908.

Some countries won their first medal and others continued their dominance. The Olympic Games were littered with exciting finishes.

Here’s a look at some of the biggest and most exciting gold-medal wins.

Andy Murray, Great Britain, Tennis

After falling short to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final just a month before, Murray came back on the same stage for redemption.

It’s possible that Murray’s win could get lost in the rush for gold by Great Britain, but it remains significant in his career and tennis history.

Murray’s strong performance was highlighted by his passing shots, which ultimately led to him winning another gold medal for the host nation.

Michael Phelps, United States, Swimming 4 x 100 meter Medley Relay

Phelps already made history in Beijing four years ago and this time in London, but this final event in his career capped the greatest run ever by an Olympic athlete.

At just 27, Phelps retired with the most medals overall, the most gold medals and no regrets.

While it may not be his greatest gold medal of the 18 he’s won, it will be remembered as the win that brought an end to a historic run.

Usain Bolt, Jamaica, Track and Field 100 meters

In one of the most glamorous events at the games, Bolt defended his gold from Beijing 2008.

There were many questions coming into the games when Bolt’s fellow countryman, Yohan Blake, beat him in the Jamaican Olympic Trials.

Bolt expunged all of the doubts after seemingly cruising to a victory in the medal event and setting a new Olympic record.
