Speaking with MMA fanhouse, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson had some choice words on co-No. 1 contender Lyoto Machida.
"Lyoto is a weird fighter," Jackson said. "He's kind of boring. I think that style works for him, the way he makes people run after him. I mean, he's good, he's undefeated, but he's boring. If I was the promoter of a show I wouldn't have guys like that fighting on my show."
Both Jackson and Machida currently have their sights set on a title shot, though a victory over Keith Jardine at UFC 96 will likely give Jackson the nod against current light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans.
Machida is often criticized for his elusive style, but it's usually fans...not fighters, who criticize him. Jackson usually refrains from expressing his opinions about other fighters so it seems unusual that he would openly criticize Machida like this.
The timing also seems odd, given that Machida is coming off one of the most exciting fights in his undefeated MMA career. However, it's likely these two will meet at some point in the future. Perhaps Jackson has chosen to start the mental warfare early, though Machida doesn't seem to be the type rattled by trash talk.
While Jackson may find Machida boring, a bout between the two would be anything but. Jackson throws one the hardest punches in MMA while Machida is one of the hardest to hit. Let's hope these two collide in the octagon sooner rather than later.
