Jen Kessy and April Ross will look to pull off an upset this afternoon as they face Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in a heated contest where both sides will be representing the USA.

Kessy and Ross are flying high with confidence, but they will have to knock off the winners of two consecutive gold medals if they wish to bring home the gold.

Here are a few reasons why Kessy and Ross can finally put an end to Misty and Kerri's reign.

Momentum is on their side.

Kessy and Ross are coming off an emotional comeback victory over Larissa Franca and Juliana Silva of Brazil in the semifinals.  This duo is focused and has the right frame of mind heading into the finals.

After being tied in the first set and failing to gain a lead for much after in the beginning of the semis, Kessy and Ross came roaring back with clutch kills to seal the victory.  The victorious duo combined to have 38 kills overall.  They displayed a special kind of resilience gold medal winners need to have.

The pressure is on Misty and Kerri.

The duo of Misty and Kerri have won two consecutive gold medals heading into this match.  Misty and Kerri have the ultimate experience of bringing home the Gold and performing at the highest level in the most important moments.  But with this comes the added pressure and expectations for them to repeat yet again.

Kessy and Ross can come into this match proud of what they have already accomplished, while Misty and Kerri can only disappoint.

There is some familiarity.

These two duos are familiar enough with each other's games to where there should be no surprises. This is unlike if two different countries were to square off.  These duos have practiced with each other and have long been familiar with each other's abilities.

This serves in Ross and Kessy's favor because they will need this comfort level more than the experienced gold medalists, Misty and Kerri.

Kessy and Ross just defeated the top ranked duo.

The duo of Kessy and Ross just proved they can take down the highest level of competition.  By "slaying the dragon" they can now relax and play the game loosely.  Heading into the Franca and Silva match, they had to have felt the giant burden of facing the top duo.

That burden is now lifted and they can prepare to face a familiar foe.

The Magic of the Olympics

There is something to be said for the big moments and special stories in the Olympics, and Kessy and Ross are shaping up to be one of the better headlines of the Summer games.  Whenever an athlete has that special swagger on their side, it seems like fate tips the scales in their favor.

Kessy and Ross are riding the waves of an upset victory right now and they hope to use it to overcome the tough duo of Misty and Kerri.
