With Chelsea needing desperately to improve upon its situation at right-back, the club has made what Sky Sports is reporting as "a serious approach" towards Marseille defender and Spanish international, Cesar Azpilicueta.

According to Sky Sports, Marseille are thought to want £8 million for the 22-year-old star.

Chelsea's current right-back is 28-year-old Branislav Ivanovic, who would be better suited for the centre-back role that he filled in 14 of his 26 appearances last season.

Azpilicueta, who is more of a traditional defender and could help improve Chelsea's 1.21 goals against average last season, spent his summer at the Olympics playing for an underwhelming Spanish team that finished last in group play.

Why the poor play? Only conceding two goals in three group matches, it certainly wasn't defense. The Spanish youth team just couldn't put one between the posts, failing to score even once.

Given the kind of transfer action Chelsea has seen in Roberto Di Matteo's first summer as manager of the Blues, spending more than £60 million bringing in Oscar, Eden Hazard and Marko Marin to Stamford Bridge, an £8 million bid for an up-and-coming defender is little more than pocket change when it could solve a desperate problem on Chelsea's back line.

In my opinion, Chelsea needs to put an underwhelming David Luiz on the bench, pair up Ivanovic and John Terry in the center and bring Azpilicueta in as the right-back.
