One of the longest running transfer stories of the summer...is still going on.

Clint Dempsey has been courted by Liverpool since the beginning of the summer and Dempsey himself added speculation when he stayed behind from Fulham's training camp in Switzerland.

Amid all these rumors, a deal has failed to materialize, much to the chagrin of some Liverpool fans.

Here are four reasons why a Dempsey deal needs to happen sooner rather than later.

Lack of Transfer Activity

Brendan Rodgers was brought in to revolutionize Liverpool and, while it obviously isn't going to happen overnight, BR's only transfer addition has been 21-year-old Italian Fabio Borini, who isn't exactly the world-class player Liverpool fans were expecting.

And while Clint Dempsey isn't exactly world-class either, signing the American would be a signal of intent from Rodgers.

With such a lack of transfer activity thus far in the summer, Dempsey coming to Anfield might ease the minds of some fans.

It Would Bring in the American Audience

America has been following the Dempsey saga all summer, bringing in a bigger American audience to an already global following.

Imagine the American following if Liverpool signed its biggest star.

Dempsey shirts would sell like hotcakes. Liverpool would get more exposure this side of the pond.

It would be a fantastic marketing move by Liverpool if Dempsey were wearing Red this season.

Liverpool Still Needs to Address Its Weakness on the Wing

After Stewart Downing's horrible first season and Craig Bellamy looking set to leave, Liverpool is severely lacking on the wings.

Granted (hopefully) Downing's game-winner against FC Gomel is a sign of things to come, but until he can prove his worth, Liverpool needs a solid winger.

Dempsey had a fantastic season last season, scoring 17 goals and becoming the first American to score 50 goals in the Premier League.

Liverpool could use that goal-scoring prowess off the wing this season.

It Doesn't Look as If Liverpool Is Going to Get Anybody Else

Liverpool has missed out on Gylfi Sigurdsson, Luuk de Jong and a bunch of other transfer targets.

A deal for Gaston Ramirez has also failed to materialize over the summer, leaving Liverpool fans wanting for a deal for someone.

Out of everyone Liverpool has been linked to, they look closest to signing Dempsey.

While some fans might not have Dempsey as a first choice, it looks as if that's all we are going to get.
