Perhaps the most epic finish in this sport was given to us by Nicola Spirig of Switzerland and Lisa Norden of Sweden, who put out a photo finish to kickstart the Olympic event.
Despite both contestants clocking at 1:59.48, Spirig was given the gold as she crossed the tape with her foot before Norden leaned her head towards the tape, attempting a minimal lead.
Both women dropped to their knees immediately after crossing the tape, with Australia's Erin Densham finishing a close third.
In the men's competition, Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee notched the gold, finishing with an impressive 1:46 25 mark before teammate Javier Gomez of Spain and little brother Jonathan Brownlee.
All three men run for the same team in France. The Brownlee brothers set the pace for the field, going full throttle in each of the triathlon's sections and ultimately bringing Great Britain's its first ever medals in the sport.
