Manchester United transfer target Leighton Baines has been urged by his Everton teammates not to make a move to Old Trafford over the summer transfer window but to stay at Goodison Park for the upcoming English Premier League season.
Baines is touted as a replacement at left-back for United defender Patrice Evra. He has also been a long-standing interest of Sir Alex Ferguson (via The Metro) but is under great pressure to snub a move to the Red Devils over the summer.
South African international Steven Pienaar has urged Baines to stay at Everton, as the two try to rekindle their potent partnership for the Tofees.
It's not up to me [whether Baines stays or leaves]. It's up to the club to keep their best players but hopefully he'll stay and so will the rest of the guys.
It will be important for the team. We had a good understanding in the last couple of seasons, so, if he stays, it will make everyone happy as well because we know how important he is to the entire team.
He can score goals from set-pieces and it's not just me who benefits from playing alongside him. He's a vital player for the club—everyone knows it from the manager to the supporters. Let's hope and see if we can hold on to him.
Leighton texted me a few weeks ago asking what was happening with me, but I didn't ask him about his future. I know he's had some great success at the club and, if he does get the opportunity to move, I think everyone will respect it.
But for the club, it's important to keep our best players and we all want him to stay and he knows it. It's not in our hands, though.
Pienaar's comments are sure to go down well with Everton supporters, who are desperate to keep the England international at the club ahead of the upcoming English Premier League season.
Manchester United have reportedly set a £12 million limit on any transfer regarding Leighton Baines (via Goal.com), but with the club publicly stating just how important the 27-year-old is to their chances at success, any offer they do make will have to be a significant one.
You get the feeling that Baines is desperately wanted by the club and that they're doing all they can to hang on to him for next season—even if that means urging him to snub a move by Manchester United.
Do you think Leighton Baines will end up signing for Manchester United?
