Amidst all the training camp news that includes injuries, position battles and changes to the depth chart, it has been reported that the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts have made a trade.

The Eagles will be sending Greg Lloyd and Moise Fokou, two players who were a part of last season’s linebacker carousel, to Indianapolis. In exchange, the Birds will be receiving cornerback Kevin Thomas and a conditional seventh-round draft selection in 2013.

Philadelphia’s linebacker corps underwent a drastic makeover during the offseason, and with newcomers DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks expected to start from Week 1, there simply wasn’t enough room for Lloyd or Fokou.

Thomas missed all of 2010 after being selected in the third round of that year’s draft, but he recovered to play in nine games, while starting five last season. He recorded 20 tackles and three pass deflections for one of the NFL’s worst secondaries.

Even with the trade that sent Asante Samuel to the Atlanta Falcons, the Eagles remain solid at cornerback.

If Thomas wants any shot at making the opening-day roster, he’ll have to outplay the likes of Joselio Hanson, Curtis Marsh and Brandon Hughes—which is no easy task when you consider 10 days of training camp have already passed.

The way I see it, Andy Reid, who works the draft brilliantly, was merely trying to acquire an extra pick for two players who had very little chance of making his team.

With two more linebackers gone, this affords youngsters like Brian Rolle, Casey Matthews, Jamar Chaney and Kendricks some extra reps in practice that may prove to be invaluable.
