Jerry Manuel Wants Daniel Murphy For Everyday Left Fielder

Wendy AdairAnalyst IFebruary 22, 2009

Jerry Manuel has liked what he has seen so far from Daniel Murphy, both during the 2008 season and so far this Spring Training.  He has said earlier today that he is leaning towards giving Murphy the left field position as an everyday player.

David Wright has taken Murphy under his wing and, like Wright, for the most part he has a very good plate discipline. They will both prosper under Manuel and HoJo's managing and coaching this spring and summer.

He hits for both power and average and has shown good speed on the bases.  Murphy did have some experience last year in left field and did struggle at times, but with Carlos Beltran playing next to him in center field, he will improve in his depth perception.

He did participate in the Arizona Fall League to learn second base in the event that Luis Castillo proved that he was not up to being an every day player.  Castillo has lost 17 pounds and appears to be in excellent shape.

Manuel was originally planning to use the platoon of Murphy and Tatis but has decided to use Tatis off the bench and as back up to Wright at third base for days that rest is needed or in the unfortunate event of an injury to either Wright or one of the corner outfielders.
