The National Hockey League has a "March Madness" of a different kind.
Only sixteen of thirty teams will make the post-season, and the Flames are in good shape to qualify.
March is crucial for the Flames, as they play fourteen games, and many of them against teams below them in the standings. Currently, the Flames record this month is 3-1-1, putting them atop the Northwest Division.
But let's not get too comfortable as Colorado is charging hard down the stretch. They have won six of eight and have collected points in ten of their past twelve games. The Avalanche are currently tied with the Flames at 82 points.
Only two matchups between the two clubs remain, each team with one game at home. The way I see it, if the Flames can win both those games in regulation, we should take the third seed into the playoffs.
It looks pretty likely that these two teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs, and the Flames need some confidence against the Avalanche. Colorado has won four of the six matchups this season, and if we can slow down the surging Avs, success may result in the playoffs.
