Olympic Water Polo 2012: Day 8 Results, Schedule & Analysis
Croatia remains the only team to have won its first four games, claiming an uncontested first place in Group A with its 11-6 win against Australia. The Croatians shot a whopping 60 percent from the field while limiting Australia to a measly 20 percent. Led by Maro Jokovic's three goals and three assists, Croatia had no problem dispatching the Aussies to lock up the top spot, given as its next game is against Kazakhstan, which has yet to earn a win in this Olympics.
Spain beat Greece 11-9 to move into second place in Group A, Italy surged past Kazakhstan 9-6 to move into third place. These two will face each other in a battle for second place in the last match of group play.
Meanwhile, Serbia cruised past the U.S. 11-6 despite a brave performance by goalkeeper Merrill Moses, who totaled 12 saves (eight in the first half). The Americans struggled to get the ball to hole-set Ryan Bailey, who led the team with two goals. Captain Tony Azevedo had a critical penalty shot saved in the fourth quarter, making the chances of a comeback slim to none.
With the win, Serbia moved past the U.S. and now leads Group B with seven points, with the Americans closely trailing with six.
Montenegro beat Romania convincingly 12-8 to move to third place, right behind the U.S. Hungary throttled Great Britain 17-6 to ensure a place in the quarterfinals (the first four teams of each group qualify).
