The U.S. women came away with the gold after medaling silver, bronze and silver in the last three Olympiads. Getting past Australia in the semifinals, the U.S. delivered the knockout punch against Spain, thanks to a five-goal display by phenom Maggie Steffens, who lead the tournament with 21 goals.

The U.S. men won their first three matches, but lost their last five; finishing a disappointing eighth place while Croatia earned its first gold, defeating Italy 8-6 as gold-favorite Serbia settled for bronze.

Olympic powerhouse Hungary finished fifth, failing to medal for the first time in the last four Olympiads, having won three consecutive Olympic titles since Sydney 2000.
