Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers is working hard this summer to ensure that he has the best possible lineup he can provide for Anfield when the EPL season begins.
The Reds have already made a number of moves in the transfer market, but it seems that the most important steps are still to come.
Let’s take a look at who the side is targeting and the latest rumors and whispers on their potential defections to Liverpool.
It’s not secret that the Reds covet the Welsh midfielder, but Swansea City is making it an extremely difficult process to pry him away.
According to the South Wales Evening Post, Swansea rejected Rodgers’ £12 million bid for Allen and is expected to bump that number up to £15 million before they even consider letting him go.
The 22-year-old Welsh international is one of the brightest young stars in England, which is a large reason why the Swans have no desire to see him go.
However, with Liverpool’s deep pockets and Allen’s probable desire to play at the highest level, a deal should be extremely possible to work out before the season starts.
The American international is an extremely skilled and versatile player. He’s able to score and move well with the ball, while also possessing a knack for setting up teammates. However, according to Kristian Walsh of The New York Times, his pitch skills may not even be his most valuable asset.
He could also bring something else much coveted at Anfield — the United States dollar. Dempsey is arguably the U.S. national team’s most prized asset having been capped 87 times and spending three years at the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. Liverpool’s American owners are keen to raise awareness of the club across the Atlantic — if preseason games in Toronto, Boston and Baltimore did not serve as a clue, perhaps the coming six-part show on Fox Soccer to be shown in the autumn will.
Dempsey would be a major upgrade on the field and, possibly, a huge marketing success off of it should the Reds score his services from Fulham.
The winger with striking abilities is another option for Liverpool up front if they cannot, or choose not, to land Dempsey.
According to Jamie Sanderson of the Metro, the Uruguayan national and his agent are currently in London for the Olympics but are also discussing transfer business with Rodgers.
The 21-year-old currently plays with Bologna, but it’s unlikely he lasts much longer with the side. Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United, Manchester City, Inter and Tottenham are also interested in acquiring his services.
However, Bologna is currently seeking £15 million for his services and that has been a major deterrent for all inquiring parties.
