Carlos Guillen: Detroit's new left fielder.
Yes, that's right Tiger fans. The guy who can't stay healthy because of his balky knees and aching hamstrings is now going to be asked to cover the spacious outfield of Comerica Park on a regular basis. (Maybe that's why I call this article 'Breakdown?')
Let's see how long this lasts. Perhaps about as long as his stint as the first baseman last year?
Personally, I don't think he can do it. This is a guy who has had an enormous struggle in his career staying healthy. That kind of an issue usually doesn't suddenly resolve itself when you are pushing into your mid 30s.
Speaking of mid 30s, it tends to be cold in Detroit in April. That doesn't help Guillen and his balky knees and bad hamstrings very much, trying to range across the outfield.
Gary Sheffield and Marcus Thames will get a decent share of at bats in left field, and I for-see Guillen getting hurt again this year and struggling to play 100 games.
When healthy he is a force in the lineup, as 2006 and 2007 proved. Too bad this is 2009.
