Through 54 holes, Adam Scott appeared poised to win his first major. Through 70 holes it still appeared that way.
With Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell self-destructing, the legend, Ernie Els made an improbable comeback over the last few holes, capping it with a birdie at No. 18.
After Els finished his tournament at -7, Scott led by one shot with two remaining. He bogeyed both to give Els the Claret Jug. Here is the final leaderboard:

So what started as a brutal display of golf turned into a dramatic finish that I honestly didn't expect. Sometimes in golf a round just gets away from you and that's what happened to Adam Scott.
Anyone who wants to say he choked, don't forget the approach he hit at 18. He needed to make par to force the playoff. He had to get on the green and one-putt. He stuck that approach perfectly on the biggest swing of his life.
Another huge ovation for Els and well deserved for such a hard fought victory.
Els hit 79.2 percent of his greens and averaged 298.1 off the tee.
Els is just a class act as well, comforting Adam Scott and praising him for his level of talent.
Here is the champion, Ernie Els receiving his second Claret Jug! Huge ovation from what was a really awesome crowd this week. He kisses the jug and holds it up. Amazing moment.
Amazingly, Els didn't shoot a single round over par. He had rounds of 67, 70, 68, 68.
I'm a Tiger fan and I've always had faith but if he couldn't win this major, which one is he going to win? He started today at -6, five shots back. He finished the day at -3, four shots back. He just can't put four rounds together and he has been awful in the final round lately.
Although Els had already won three majors, he keeps the streak alive of 16 different champions in the last 16 majors. It's his second Open Championship win and he was the last champion at Muirfield, where next years Open Championship will be played.

Prior to his start today, Els was talking to ESPN on the broadcast and said he felt like he could win today. He came out and did it. As much as people will be tempted to say Scott gave it away, you have to play all 72 holes. Ernie finished one shot better after 72, it's as simple as that.
I couldn't be happier for Els. He played great at the U.S. Open, he played great this week. Just great to see him reap the rewards.
People will probably clobber Scott for the collapse but this was a tremendous comeback by Ernie Els, one of the true greats.

Scott steps up and misses it over the left edge! Ernie Els is the Open Champion! Adam Scott bogeyed the last four holes!
McDowell with a great putt to get inside five feet from the hole. Scott will be putting to force a playoff.
McDowell has to get on the green before Scott can attempt his putt. He is beside the clubhouse. Scott will have more time to think about this putt too.
Huge ovation from the crowd. Great appreciation for what Scott just pulled off there.

Scott's third is hit about as well as he could have hoped there. Has to make par to force a playoff and he gets within about 10 feet! Clutch shot by Scott!
Scott is trying to figure out how to play this shot. He lets McDowell swing first and he runs it off the green and toward the clubhouse. Scott clips the face of the bunker and shoots it sideways onto the fairway.
Scott's tee shot on No. 18 finds a fairway bunker! He could have trouble even advancing this!
Brandt Snedeker makes his par to finish at -3. Nice job to bounce back after a terrible start.

Tiger makes a birdie to finish at -3 for the tournament. Nice end for an awful day for Tiger.
Scott lines up the long par putt and he misses way left. He makes bogey and now Ernie Els is tied for first.
Scott is figuring his putt out while McDowell just misses his birdie try.
Scott blasts hit out of the rough and leaves himself a really long par putt. Els is on the practice range in case he has more work to do.

Scott may have some nerves now and probably will have a tough par to make from here.
