Will Solomon, the third or fourth guy on the Raptors PG rotation (it depends if you count Parker at the one, which I don’t), has been traded in part of a three way deal involving a trade pick and a backup centre named Patrick O’Bryant that I’d never heard of.
I guess it’s a good deal, seeing as how the Raps had a glut of guards and a shortage of tall guys. I don’t hate it, but it also doesn’t mean anything; my original take on it comes from an old Hunter S. Thompson line: it’s like trading an used mattress for a three-dollar bill.
A quick run to the ESPN trade machine—I love that thing, even if they took out the non-player parts of it—shows that it doesn’t matter a difference by John Hollinger’s numbers for any of the parties.
I’m in the same party; this is just a depth move for Toronto. They moved a guard (one who I’m not really big on) to add somebody to stick behind Bargnani and in front of Jawai, who Colangelo obviously doesn’t feel big on.
They must have been stuck for finding somebody though: the guy they got was behind Kendrick Perkins and Brian Scalabrine in Boston. Since he’s played less the five minutes this season, one suspects that it must have been hard for Colangelo to have seen something he liked in the guy.
I do think it shows a little bit for the near future of Raptors though. If management thought the season was over, would they have added depth? One thinks that by adding him, the Raptors are gearing up for a run at the postseason - at least think that they can.
But is O’Bryant the key to the postseason? Will he ultimately make a difference? Will he even get a chance to hand out Gatorade in the locker room at half time?
In a word, no.
