UFC 149 Prelims: Power Ranking the Preliminary Card Results

If you had something to do earlier Saturday evening but figured you could buy the pay-per-view and skip the free fights, well, I'm sorry that didn't work out.

To put it in a nutshell, every main card engagement was a syrupy slow decision, with the exception of Matt Riddle's Submission of the Night over Chris Clements.

The preliminary card featured four finishes (and three KOs) in six fights. One of the fights nearly tied the record for fastest knockout in the UFC.

Here's how they stack up against one another. 

6. Anton Kuivanen vs. Mitch Clarke

Lightweight bout
Result: Kuivanen by split decision

I suppose the two fights that went to decision have to be considered the least exciting. This one was still a decent (if a bit sloppy) fight, especially compared with some of the others.

5. Court McGee vs. Nick Ring

Middleweight bout
Result: Ring, Unanimous Decision 

First Riki Fukuda, now Court McGee. Ring now has two controversial decision wins on his UFC resume.

Ring walked to the cage accompanied by fellow Canadian and wrestling legend Bret Hart. So at a minimum, we can all be happy that "The Hitman" was finally on the right side of a screw job. Boom!

4. Bryan Caraway vs. Mitch Gagnon

Bantamweight bout
Result: Caraway, Submission, Round 3 

Gagnon had some heavy ground and pound for Caraway. At least, that is, until he tuckered out. Wily veteran Caraway outlasted Gagnon and eventually got a rear naked choke for the victory.

3. Roland Delorme vs. Francisco Rivera

Bantamweight bout
Result: Rivera, KO, Round 1

It was slightly more competitive than the stat line suggests. But yeah...still pretty one-sided. If there was a Standup Performance of the Night bonus, Rivera would have won it.

Rivera had power, he had hand speed, he had great movement and he had perfect range. He won this fight and deserved to win it. 

 

2. Antonio Carvalho vs. Daniel Pineda

Featherweight bout
Result: Carvalho, KO, Round 1

In just 71 seconds, Carvalho turned in the upset of the night. He also showed he is a legitimate big leaguer with his sustained display of calm and accuracy, plus a liberal dose of the smooth.  

1. Anthony Perosh vs. Ryan Jimmo

Light heavyweight bout
Result: Jimmo, KO, Round 1

You sort of have to give the top slot to the co-fastest knockout in UFC history.

Jimmo wrapped up his Knockout of the Night bonus in only seven seconds, getting within one second of tying Duane Ludwig for the fastest KO in the Octagon.

In the end, Anthony Perosh was splayed on the mat and gaping up at the lights like a hooked fish.
