In a statement on their website, the Minnesota Vikings confirmed that former general manager Mike Lynn has died.

"The Vikings are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Lynn," the statement read. "He was instrumental in the success of the Vikings for many years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lynn family in this difficult time."

Lynn, who had been residing in Mississippi, passed away at the age of 76 on Saturday.  He was the general manager in Minnesota from 1975 to 1990 and was the last person to hold that title until Rick Spielman was promoted in 2012.

Lynn is most known for being the mastermind behind the worst trade in Minnesota Vikings history in which the Vikings acquired RB Hershel Walker from the Dallas Cowboys for five players and six draft picks in 1989.

That trade allowed the Cowboys to turn picks into players like RB Emmitt Smith, DT Russell Maryland and S Darren Woodson among other players in their run to three Super Bowls in the 1990s. Walker only played two seasons for the Vikings, never surpassing 1,000 yards.

In a recent story by the Pioneer Press, Lynn is also revered for making another deal but in this instance a very shrewd one.

The deal struck in 1982 paid Lynn 10 percent of luxury suite revenue for every event at the Metrodome for as long as the Vikings were still residents.
