It's Time For Arsenal To Let Loose Their Only January Signing Against Sunderland

Andrei Ashavin, signed 2 February 2009 for a record fifteen million pounds from Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg, is about to receive his chance to show his worth.

The undoubtedly talented Russian midfielder who was instrumental in Russia's Euro campaign is set to make his debut for the Gunners against Sunderland. The 27-year-old who should fill the gaping hole in the midfield that is without the likes of captain Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Abou Diaby, and Tomas Rosicky—lacks experience, a clean head and just down right skill.

Arshavin will hopefully (and thankfully) keep Emmanuel Eboue out of right midfield action for the rest of the season. His pace, balance and accuracy passing plus his lethal crosses will be more than useful in Arsenal's sprint for the top four. The Russian will also prove useful in defence as he is of a decent size.

It should be a routine victory for Arsenal but those seem to be stuck somewhere this season. The previous encounter between these two saw a last gasp goal from captain Cesc Fabregas to ensure Arsenal scabbed a point from the 1-1 draw. Unfortunately Arsenal will be without their fearless leader but none the less star striker Robin van Persie and in-form winger Samir Nasri are still fighting fit and strong.

It is those two who I feel can take control of the game and put it beyond Sunderland's reach. Nasri's pace will be a big factor, Arsenal have to ensure he sees more ball than previous occasions. But it is Van Persie who Arsenal need to ensure sees the most ball. The striker, who has easily been Arsenal's top performer this season (although Bacary Sagna may have a say in that). The Dutch striker is Arsenal's top scorer with 14. His creativity and passing will be the key if Arsenal want to find the back of the net.

Hopefully an easy victory.
