Excuse me Jon Fitch. . .

Dorothy Willis explores what Jon Fitch is aware of, and where did he develop this psychic ability to 'read' Georges St. Pierre?

MMA, Matt Serra, Georges St. Pierre, Jon Fitch

Today I read an article "Jon Fitch Calls out Georges St. Pierre" which isn't too surprising since Fitch is one of the young lions salivating for a chance at the welterweight belt.

What is surprising is that it is still up in the air who will be the welterweight champ since the Serra-St. Pierre fight has not yet taken place.

Seems like it would make more sense to call out the winner of the belt, or say "Matt Serra or Georges St. Pierre; whoever wins the belt on April 19."  I know Matt Serra is used to being underestimated, but still . . . why be impolite?

Then Fitch  states he has watched all St. Pierre's fights and has learned from close observation that "Georges doesn't like being knocked out."

My response being, "Duh, what MMA fighter does?"  Why is this so enlightening to Jon?  Does he like the prospect of being knocked out and ruining his unblemished record?

Then why is this news to him that another fighter would try to prevent being knocked out by any means necessary, be it taking the fight to the ground, or striking first to prevent a KO?

Georges has demonstrated many ways to overpower an opponent: kicks, rear naked chokes, armbars, by points, etc.  He didn't get to where he is by standing still asking his opponents to test his chin.

If Fitch's new technique involves doing the latter to prove his chin is superior to Georges, I am sure Georges will accommodate him, but what a silly strategy.

Those who stand flat footed with their chin up and hands down have a name, Mr. Fitch, I believe it is spelled L-O-S-E-R-S.

  1. GSP's chin has to be questioned because Serra hit him square on the chin and overwhelmed him. Although there is a lot of fighters who don't like being hit, there are those who do: Forrest Griffin has been quoted as saying "I don't fight good until I've been hit in a fight." Fitch has had 8 straight wins (with a lackluster win over Chris Wilson recently) and he's looking at a GSP fight. What if Serra wins? Serra wouldn't be a good match-up for him either. Serra has great BJJ and can defend the takedown and if Fitch can't take you down, then there is going to be a problem. Both GSP and Serra don't match up good with him.

  2. Anyone can be knocked out if hit on the right spot, not just GSP. I am sure Fitch will get the point one day. I seem to remember Forrest sobbing on the floor of the octagon after a lot of hits one night--it didn't look like he had enjoyed it at all.

  3. well yeah, forrest is a passionate guy and he wasn't crying about being hit...he was crying because he lost a fight he should have won...Keith hits hard but Forrest was pissed about himself

  4. OK, what happened to Liddell--did Rampage hit him on the button or not? Did he like it any better than Georges did? And I believe Houston Alexander ko'd a few people who had never heard his name before. Hit any fighter 'just right' and they are going down; no, they are not going to like being ko'd either, and that is my point.

  5. Good article, and i dont think GSPs chin shoudl be questioned at all and i really dont think GSP would be too wrried about bein kod by Fitch. when he was knocked out the punch that really hurt him was a looping shot that hit him like behind tthe head or something. if you think about it he took the most shots in the bj penn fight, your totally right he is a great fighter and he fights with his chin down and hand up.

  6. So this piece of Fitch thinks that GSP, a talented striker and primarily so, is SCARED because he outwrestled two excellent wrestlers in Koschek & Hughes AND proceeded to beat them at their own game?? Clearly Fitch is disillusioned or is dumber than a bag of hammers; GSP exhibited more courage by challenging both K & H at their very own game and coming out on top. I just hope if GSP were ever to meet Fitch, he would put on a clinic and display his striking in full force. Fitch would end up on the ground -- lights out and mouth shut.

  7. anyaa, you do have a great point in that fitch does not match up with either GSP or serra, and if you look at his last fight against hazelett, if there would have been another 10 or 15 seconds at the end of that round, hazelett wins by triangle choke. But on the other hand, if you watch the GSP vs serra fight close, the blow that rocks GSP is a hard right hook that comes over the top and side of his head and catches him right above his temple. You could probably hit a horse in that spot and knock it down because it is a very vulnerable spot to the skull.

  8. make that wilson, not hazelett...

  9. Good point about the blow to the temple. You are so right about that.

  10. He is calling him out because GSP has let the Serra knock out effect his fighting and game planning. His fighting like he is SCARED to get knocked-out. In Hughes vs GSP 2, GSP easily won the stand-up and knocked out hughes. in their 3rd match he still dominated him, but he choose to out wrestle a wrestler, which is much more difficult. The same with Koscheck. He is fighting like he doesn't like getting knocked out, and that is why Fitch is calling him out on it.

  11. How can you say he is fighting scared when he is beating guys at their own strengths? That is a true testiment to a great game plan and executing it to a t in the fact that you are putting the opponent in a position that they are not prepared for because they are not used to being tested at their own game. For instance, did you think that Kos expected GSP to outwrestle him? The answer is no, because after the fight, he admitted that he overlooked his wrestling training for that fight because he thought it would be more stand up striking. I'm sure GSP that it is just a fluke that he outwrestled Kos and didn't plan on putting him in an uncomfortable position........

  12. Fitch is a good fighter, somwhat on the boring side but is he on the same level as a GSP, simply stated no, or not yet at least, lets see a Fitch vs. Josh Koscheck, lets even see a fitch vs. Karo Parysian, before we see a fitch vs. GSP, yes i know fitch is on a 8 fight win streak right now but he just went the distance with chris wilson, here are a couple of facts on his eight fights, 1.) he has never finished a fight in the first round 2.) He has one TKO win 3.) three submission wins 4.) 4 of his fights have went the distance, im not saying this proves anything at all, i would just like to see him evolve a little more befre he gets thrown in their and overwhelmed by GSP, but who knows , maybe he will fight GSP after Serra beats GSP for the second time, we will jsut have to wait and see

  13. Fitch and Koscheck train together. Although they might agree to fight each other it wouldn't be as exciting as seeing them fight someone outside their camp, IMO. Kos has been trying to call out Matt Hughes to see "who is the better wrestler." I would rather see either one of them or Matt Hughes fight Karo, than get a shot at GSP first. Of course Parysian and every other welterweight all want to be next in line for GSP, so a line is forming and Fitch is determined he should be at the head of the line.

  14. Fitch has lost by knockout before...his record is not unblemished.

  15. You guys are pretty much all right. It's crazy for Jon Fitch to criticize GSP's strategy, chin, heart, or skill. He has constantly proved to be an elite fighter that employs strategies that help him win fights. I think Fitch will get beat in similar fashion as to how GSP dismantled Koscheck. I believe Koscheck is better than Fitch and would lose to GSP by a wide margin. I hope GSP destroys Serra and Dana White grants BJ Penn a rematch with him. It'd also be nice to see GSP clear out the division and fight Anderson Silva at 185 which GSP said he would be willing to do.

  16. If GSP ever fights BJ Penn again I hope he is much less merciful than he was to Matt Serra in beating him on April 19. With BJ I wouldn't care how much Georges cut him up--in fact that is exactly the type of revenge I would want him to take on a fighter I consider to be much less honorable than Matt Serra.
