Magic Job: Why Stan Van Gundy Should Thank Billy Donovan

IconSome NBA coaches have big shoes to fill when they take a new job. Not so for Stan Van Gundy.

The Orlando Magic hired Van Gundy as their head coach on Thursday, just days after Billy Donovan backed out of a five-year, $27 million agreement. Donovan's dithering has made him the butt of jokes around the country...but it also means that Van Gundy doesn't have much of an act to follow when shows up for work.

So long as he actually shows up, in fact, Magic fans will have to consider themselves lucky.

In fairness to Donovan, it took plenty of guts to pull the flip-fop. He'll now limp back to Gainesville with his tail between his legs—a little worse for wear, maybe, but certainly no less embraced in Gator Nation.

And if nothing else, you can bet he'll be getting a lovely Christmas card from his buddy Stan.
