A showdown with Jon Jones may beckon for Chael Sonnen, after the fighter revealed his interest in moving up to light heavyweight.

Sonnen made the remarks on Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight on Thursday (H/T MMA fighting), following his second loss to middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

"When you get stuck in this spot that I'm in, and again, Anderson Silva could announce his retirement any day, but there's also a major opportunity for a fresh start by simply switching weight classes," Sonnen said. "That's something that's very common historically that guy's have done, you know, my mentors Randy Couture and Dan Henderson have done that, and that's something to look at, as well."

Sonnen was TKO’d by the Brazilian last Saturday in their second fight in Las Vegas. The loss puts him in limbo in the middleweight division as he is unlikely to be given a third shot at the belt so long as Silva remains champion.

Shortly after the fight at UFC 148, president Dana White said Sonnen was now at the “back of the line” for losing his two title runs. (per fightline)

However, Sonnen said that he was not making any decisions yet regarding his future, per MMA fighting:

"Give me a couple of weeks," Sonnen said. "I'm not trying to make any claim or put myself in any corner. There's some great guys at 185, and that's not what it's about, but traditionally and historically [changing weight classes] is a very good way to get a fresh start and kind of rejuvenate your career."

Sonnen has fought at 205 earlier in his career and made his UFC debut at that weight. However, following a loss to Renato “Babalu” Sobral in that fight, he quickly switched to middleweight.
