According to Boxingscene.com, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is set to fight Josesito Lopez at the MGM in Las Vegas on September 15th. This comes after long speculation on who Alvarez would fight next after various opponents fell through.
Alvarez was first supposed to fight against Paul WIlliams, which would've been a fantastic matchup, until Williams tragically got into a motorcycle crash that's left him in a rehab center as he attempts to regain use of his legs.
As a side note, good luck to Paul, he's a good dude and we wish him the best.
Then it appeared Alvarez would fight James Kirkland, but Kirkland dropped out due to a combination of a lingering shoulder injury coupled with the fact that he wanted more money.
Alvarez was then set to fight against Victor Ortiz in what would've been a slugfest for as long as it lasted. Unfortunately, Ortiz had his jaw broken in his last fight a few weeks ago against Josesito Lopez despite leading on all cards.
This matchup is pretty awful in my opinion. Lopez is a 140-pounder, and he only weighed 144 for the fight against Ortiz. How is he going to be able to fight Alvarez at 154 when Alvarez will likely rehydrate all the way up to 162-164 pounds on fight night?
It's a definite mismatch and Canelo should blow Lopez out with relative ease, although Lopez will give a great effort. But having fought a very tough, physical fight against Ortiz so recently, it's going to be an uphill battle for Lopez to defeat Canelo and pull another huge upset.
