After losing to Anderson Silva in his attempt at the middleweight championship Saturday at UFC 148, there may be a new line of work that Chael Sonnen could consider if he wants to take some time off.
World Wrestling Entertainment.
The companionship between Sonnen and the WWE seems very natural, and the company is seriously considering bringing in the UFC star. While it remains unclear what role he would play, Sonnen’s mic work is second to none and would be a great addition to the company.
F4Wonline.com reports that WWE is interested in working with 35 year old UFC fighter "The American Gangster" Chael Sonnen. Sonnen lost to Anderson Silva at Saturday's UFC 148 pay-per-view but word is that WWE is ready to negotiate. No word yet if they want him to wrestle or play another kind of role…Sonnen has ties to WWE as he is friends with WWE Champion CM Punk. Punk was ready to accompany Sonnen to the Octagon for a fight several months back but that was nixed…Sonnen is also close to WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin. Austin has been bringing Sonnen out to his Broken Skull Ranch in Texas to help him with strength and conditioning training.
If we learned one thing about Sonnen during the lead-up to his loss to Silva, it was that he is amazing at talking trash. Just like Brock Lesnar, Sonnen will see the WWE as a place to be himself and a nice alternative to being a UFC fighter all year.
Given the UFC star’s relationship with WWE stars CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin, there are many great angles the company could use. With the company always trying to capitalize on any mainstream media attention they can, there is no way they would turn down one of the biggest names in MMA.
Especially after the numbers come in for UFC 148.
UFC president Dana White said before the fight that he fully expected over a million PPV buys for the event, which will have Vince McMahon and the WWE brass ready to pull the trigger on any deal involving Sonnen.
As for what Sonnen would do in his part-time role, he should become a goon for someone like CM Punk. There will probably be a rule preventing him from wrestling because of his ties to the UFC, but that doesn’t mean he can’t talk on the mic and draw attention.
No matter how it gets done, this is something that must happen; Sonnen is too perfect for WWE.
