Griffin was selected to the final 12-man roster, which was announced on July 7 by USAbasketball.com
Then, he decided to loosen up, have some fun and put on a show for his new teammates and coaches.
After a failed toss, Griffin throws the ball off the back of the gym and charges toward the rim. He takes flight one step past the free-throw line and launches into orbit.
If you pause the video 17 seconds in, you can see that Griffin’s head is at the rim. Then, making it look easy, he catches the ball with one hand and tomahawk jams the ball into the basket.
The 2011 NBA Dunk Contest winner is the best in-game dunker in decades. His disgusting throw-downs over Timofey Mozgov and Kendrick Perkins are highlights that will be replayed over and over as long as YouTube exists.
His freakish leaping abilities will be in stark contrast to some of the slow, plodding players the United Stats will face in London. Fans might be treated to another “Vince Carter over Frederic Weis” kind of highlight.
With Griffin’s teammate, Chris Paul, dishing out passes, the conditions are perfect for Griffin to add to his repertoire. Even if Griffin has to settle for Deron Williams or Russell Westbrook hitting him when he cuts to the basket, I doubt he will mind.
Consider this video a teaser for what is to come later this summer.
