For fans of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo, this is your match. Arguably the best BJJ expert in the UFC in Demian Maia vs Judo master Dong Hyun Kim.
Kim has excellent takedowns and ground control while Maia has one of the most dangerous guards in the game. It should be a great chess match on the ground where this match is destined to go.
What to watch for:
Neither guy has amazing standup, but if there has to be an advantage it would probably go to Kim because he does have solid power in his hands. Maia has subpar standup but his BJJ makes up for that immensely. Look for Kim to have an advantage with the fight standing.
On the ground is where this match will shine. Look for Kim to use his Judo to easily get Maia down. Then look for Maia to attack from his guard. Kim has incredible ground control but the most important tool in this match will be Kim’s submission defense. It was put to the test vs Nate Diaz and he did well but Maia is a much better Jiu Jitsu artist. Look for the fight to hinge on just how well he does fending off those submissions.
With Maia making his welterweight debut, it's going to be interesting to see what effect the extra 15 pound weight cut is going to have. If he does have less energy in the second round, look for Kim to take home an easy decision victory. But if his gas tank holds up, this will be a totally different match.
Can "The Stun Gun" pull of what many would call an upset and defeat Maia? My answer is no.
Demian Maia by 2nd round submission
