The first thing that sticks out is the weight loss.

When Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino crossed paths with Patriots [team stats] quarterback Ryan Mallett earlier this spring, he couldn’t believe his former pupil’s conditioning level. Mallett looked lean, almost skinny, and Petrino knew it was a good sign.

Keep in mind, Petrino has been a longtime supporter of Mallett, who was drafted by the Patriots in the third round last year. The coach didn’t understand his free fall in the draft, which had to do with speculation about character issues...
