Daytime talk shows may get a great deal more Michael Strahan as the former Giants star is among three finalists to permanently co-host alongside Kelly Ripa.
Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 has the skinny on which male celebrity will sit alongside Ripa in the chair once occupied by the famed Regis Philbin.
Who’s going to sit next to Kelly Ripa come this September? That’s when Disney TV, ABC, and Michael Gellman have to make a decision name a successor to Regis Philbin. I am told that three names are in the finals, with one the probable winner. The names are Seth Meyers from “Saturday Night Live,” former football great Michael Strahan, and singer Josh Groban.
If you are anything like me, you weren't exactly floored by the possibilities that might accompany a September announcement.
I rather like Strahan and find him to be enjoyable and engaging in whatever he does on screen, including FOX NFL Sunday, but I'm doubtful he will win the day against a funny man like Seth Meyers, someone who shows hosting chops weekly on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update segment.
It seems my notion is spot on as Meyers has a hold of the lead, according to the report.
Others who’d like the gig have not been asked back as many times as Meyers. Strahan has been a strong contender, but in the end, I’m told, it’s Meyers who has the widest appeal, background and strengths.
Meyers is set to host a full week starting Monday, July 9, and should be in the driver's seat the rest of the way. Barring a huge meltdown, I would say the gig is his.
However, this is not to knock Strahan, who devoted the better part of his life to becoming a professional athlete.
Transitioning to a full-fledged personality isn't easy. It takes charisma, screen presence and the ability to improvise on the fly.
Just getting this far in the process signals Strahan is suited for bigger and better things.
