Sonnen vs. Silva II: Why Sonnen Will Unleash the Wrath of the American Gangster
It has been quite some time since my last article. My departure from writing had to do with a bit of boredom with MMA, as events have been sluggish.
However, the only event that I, and probably millions of fans worldwide, have been anticipating is the rematch between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva at UFC 148. Fans can be assured that there will be fireworks, even more trash-talking and tons of ground-and-pound from the "American Gangster," Chael Sonnen.
At UFC 117, Chael Sonnen backed up every ounce of his words by stomping down Anderson Silva in every round and shocked fans who probably thought Silva was going to knock him out like a bag of potatoes.
Sonnen dominated Silva with vicious ground-and-pound and continuous takedowns to maintain a dominant position. He was within seconds of securing a victory when Silva slapped on the triangle/arm bar, forcing Sonnen to tap out.
Nevertheless, I predict that UFC 148 will be Sonnen's redemption.
Why am I so confident? UFC 117 proved that Sonnen has the template to defeat a fighter like Anderson Silva. Sonnen utilized his elite wrestling to control and secure a dominant position, which neutralized the majority of Silva's stand-up skills.
Unlike Anderson Silva's past opponents, Sonnen did not fall into the "duke him out" kind of game plan. Sonnen has Olympic-level wrestling and conditioning that can last for 10 rounds if need be. Sonnen prepares with elite-level training on a daily basis, regardless of who the opponent is.
Sonnen will be successful again with jabs and kicks that will make Silva backpedal. He can then go for takedown after takedown and unleash his barrage of ground-and-pound.
The main difference, of course, is always being aware of Silva's submission skills. Sonnen got caught last time and does not want to make the same mistake twice.
I do not see Silva knocking out Sonnen, or even securing a TKO victory. Silva landed a few combinations against him at UFC 117, but nothing was severe enough to take Sonnen out of his game. If Sonnen sticks to his wrestling, he will simply be unstoppable and impossible for Silva to defend against.
As the old saying goes, everything in hindsight is 20/20. Silva can come out and win in the first or last minute of any round. Any MMA fan knows that once two warriors get locked inside the Octagon, anything can happen.
I just predict that Chael Sonnen will utilize all his inner strength to unleash the rage that has been building up since UFC 117. By now the world has experienced the nonstop verbal anguish that he has directed at Anderson Silva.
UFC 148 will be the playground for Sonnen to prove that he can defeat Anderson Silva and silence all critics. Will it be easy? Of course not. What fight is easy? But fans worldwide can be assured that Chael Sonnen will be locked, loaded and ready to throw down like an "American Gangster"...minus the guns, of course.
