Like a good comedy, boxing is full of characters and hilarious story lines. Boxing even has its own comedians like Mike Tyson and notorious trash talkers like Ricardo Mayorga. These guys provide the comedic element that keeps people tuned in.
Like James Smith once said, "Laughing is the best orgasm, and the best sex I've ever had was with a boxer."
Nate Campbell Sticks It Out and Gets Nailed
Date: March 14, 2004
Robbie Peden and Nate Campbell were fighting an eliminatory match with the winner earning the right to challenge for the world super lightweight title in a future fight. Campbell immediately took advantage of the opportunity and dominated Peden from all angles for several minutes plugging away on him round after round. Never the quitter, Peden stubbornly hung in there refusing to lay down and just succumb to Campbell's assault like others had done in the past. In a moment of blind arrogance, Campbell stuck out his chin in the fifth round and invited Peden to lay a hard one on his face.
Peden immediately obliged this request and landed the money shot on Campbell's jaw knocking him down. Campbell laid on the canvas sprawled out on his back before repositioning himself on all fours as he tried to erect himself. Campbell was unable to do so and was subsequently counted out in one of the most hilarious knockout losses of all time.
Boxer Loses by Diarrhea KO
Date: October 15, 2005
Former welterweight title holder Andrew Lewis had retreated to his native Guyana after submitting to both Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito almost back to back.
On the date in question, Lewis faced a local bum named Denny Dalton in an attempt to resurrect his defunct career. Lewis looked horrible in the four rounds that the fight lasted and literally ran out of the ring towards the bathroom before the fight was over. According to Lewis, he was unable to control his bowels and had to leave the ring before defecating all over it. Lewis' performance showed that he has never been the same since being pounded on by both Mayorga and Margarito. On the bright side, most fans did find the whole ordeal quite comical and were able to enjoy Lewis' misfortune.
Oscar De La Hoya in Drag
Back in 2007, photos of Oscar de la Hoya dressed up in sexy women's underwear surfaced all over the media. Of course De La Hoya subsequently denied that it was him but nobody really believes him. A mix of shock and hilarity filled the minds of most boxing fans when they viewed images of De La Hoya bent over seemingly ready to take it in the backside while wearing fishnet stockings and a wig. Although gay Mexicans celebrated this coming out of sorts, hardcore masculine fighters like Fernando Vargas, Demarcus Corley, and Fernando Montiel were at a loss for words when asked to comment.
Bernard Hopkins Floored by Small White Man
Date: August 28, 1998
Bernard Hopkins, one of three beltholders in the middleweight division, just thought he was making another dismal title defense against another bum of his weight class. Little did Hopkins know that even the referee, Mills Lane, would be able to inflict more pain on him than Robbie Allen, the hopeless bum that he was fighting.
Allen gave Hopkins all that he could handle for the first four rounds and matched Hopkins' trademark dirtiness for a totally foul filled bout. As the two wrestled all over the ring to the dismay of the fans, Lane wormed his way between the two fighters in an attempt to separate them. Lane slightly pushed both Hopkins and Allen off of each other but Hopkins, obviously weakened from his life and death struggle with the unheralded Allen, easily fell through the ropes and out of the ring onto the floor below.
Hopkins made painful, funny faces while Allen called him a coward. Lane seemed sorry for what he had done and most fans thought the whole thing was funny. Hopkins seemed genuinely in pain but some skeptics say he could have continued to fight but lacked the championship heart and ability to deal with adversity.
To Hopkins' credit and the dismay of the fans, Hopkins fought Allen two more times in dreadfully boring, dirty, and uneventful fights.
Fan Steals the Show
Date: November 6, 1993
Evander Holyfield was attempting to win back the titles that he had lost to Riddick Bowe when James Jarret Miller, also known as Fan Man, purposely flew into the arena using a powerglider and subsequently crashed it into the ring during the seventh round.
It was hilarious to watch Bowe and Holyfield stop fighting and stare in awe as Miller was awkwardly tangled in the lights. It was even funnier when Miller got pulled down from his glider by the people below and proceeded to get beaten up by the angry crowd. Miller was knocked unconscious by his attackers but deserves credit for livening up an otherwise boring fight.
