The Dallas Mavericks had their chance on Monday to make their pitch to all-star point guard Deron Williams.

But if the Mavs are successful in luring Williams, how will their projected starting lineup stack up against other contenders in the NBA?

Here's a quick breakdown of what the Mavericks starting five will look like if the three-time all-star chooses Dallas.

PG: Deron Williams

2011-12 Stats: 21.0 PPG, 8.7 APG, 3.3 RPG

Adding one of the elite point guards in the NBA in his prime to pair with Dirk Nowitzki instantly makes the Mavericks a better team than the one that went 36-30 a season ago.

By comparison, last year's starter Jason Kidd averaged 6.2 points and 5.5 assists.

D-Will would bring a whole new dimension to the Mavericks lineup.

SG: Vince Carter

2011-12 Stats: 10.1 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 2.3 APG

Based on the current roster, the Mavericks need a huge upgrade at the 2-guard spot.

The only guards currently on the roster are Carter, Rodrigue Beaubois, Dominique Jones and rookie Jared Cunningham. To compete, the Mavs need to add additional backcourt production.

That could come in the form of Brandon Roy, who the Mavs are hot after.

If Roy is healthy, a Williams-Roy backcourt could be a very good one.

SF: Shawn Marion

2011-12 Stats: 10.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.1 APG

Marion is still a great defender and can chip in a little on the offensive end.

If Dallas aims to add two high priced contracts, Marion is a guy they could trade, but his defensive abilities would fit in nicely with this lineup.

PF: Dirk Nowitzki

2011-12 Stats: 21.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 2.2 APG

With a full training camp and Nowitzki likely to come into camp in better shape, it's more likely that we see a better  season from Nowitzki from start to finish.

If that's the case, a Williams-Nowitzki one-two punch could be very good.

C: Brendan Haywood

2011-12 Stats: 5.2 PPG, 6.0 RPG

Center is another weak position on the Mavericks' roster.

Currently only Haywood and rookie Bernard James are on the books for the 2013 season.

Ian Mahinmi is a free agent that could be brought back and Dwight Howard could be a long shot possibility, but a major upgrade is needed.

Even with Williams, the Mavs are going to need to add two or three other pieces in order to be contenders in 2013.
