ARCA Driver Matt Hawkins Dies at Age 21

John DoeCorrespondent IFebruary 14, 2009

Matt Hawkins, an up-and-coming driver in the short track ranks, who won in his ARCA debut at Iowa last year and was impressive at Rockingham (mixing it up with the likes of Logano, Schrader, Stenhouse, and Annett), died this morning, apparently due to some kind of gun-related incident. He was 21.

The Canton, Ga., native was considered by many to be one of the best lower series prospects not yet snatched up by a major driver development program.

David Smith Motorsports had him ranked as a five-star prospect. Please keep the Matt Hawkins family in your thoughts and prayers.
