Dear Sean Singletary,
Thank you.
Thank you for playing hard all the time, even when the season was crumbling around you.
Thank you for lifting this team on your shoulders and making all the games that we lost in January and February so much closer than they should have been—with little inside presence, I might add.
Thank you for all the unbelievable circus shots that you’ve made seem routine, even when the score’s tied, in overtime, versus Duke, in front of a raucous crowd.
Thank you for making the best of a lame duck coach and ACC green-behind-the-ears one.
Thank you for improving your game, silencing any criticism I could have voiced.
Thank you for the exciting, no-look, behind-the-back, how-did-he-see-that assist executed at least once a game. (Thank you to Lars for catching last night’s version.)
Thank you for not complaining when it would have been so easy to after returning for your senior season.
Thank you for being a role model, showing how college basketball players should handle themselves and interact with a school that doesn’t possess the lineage that other major schools do.
Thank you for rebounding; even though you’re under six feet tall, everyone saw you jump up like a pogo stick to grab many defensive rebounds.
Thank you for barreling down the lane like a one-man wrecking crew, then lifting a tear drop over some 6’9” power forward with outstretched arms.
Thank you for continuing to play, even when your body broke down a little bit during the middle of the ACC season, when it might have been easy to shut it down for the NBA draft.
Thank you for making it so easy to cheer for you, always, no matter the score.
Sincerely,
Ben Allaire and others of UVa fandom

It is a treat to watch this kid play. Hopefully he'll have a successful NBA career.

this kid will be one of the better point guards over the next 20 years

Thank you, Ben Allaire, for choosing to write a blog about UVa basketball in a year when most other people are not writing about the Hoos.

Sean Singletary is my favorite college ball player right now, I've loved this kid since the first time I saw him play, tons of heart, nasty skills, can't wait to see him in the NBA.

Its always a great day when UVa loses (yes, I'm a Hokie), but win or lose, it was always a treat to watch Singletary. I was actually laughing out loud at what he was doing towards the end of the Maryland and how he couldn't do anything wrong. He's like Chris Long was for the football... the guy to watch just because you wanted to see what they would do next.
I'm glad he's a senior, so he'll be gone next year!

Hi commenters - I usually respond to comments individually, but these are all so positive so I'll respond collectively: Thanks for tuning in and letting me know. Singletary is the best Virginia player that I can remember (I'm a little too young to have truly enjoyed the Bryant Stith era) and he deserves all the accolades he receives.

It's players like Sean that make college basketball so much fun to watch. Its a shame that the game gets so many talented players that leave after one season. We should learn to appreciate the players who stay and honor them instead of one year wonders (Tyler Hansborough over Michael Beasley). Thanks Sean.

I agree totally with TJ. Sean is my favorite player as well as role model and has shown his true colors in a time of athletes with more arrests that assists. thanks again. GO HOOOOSSSS

Sean Singletary and Roger Mason. The Hoos lone representatives in the NBA. That's hoping Roger makes the Wizards team again next year. The ACC is a great place to play. Unfortunately, Mr. Jefferson's academic standards are a little higher than let's say, anywhere where Jerry Tarkanian has worked!

Ben, I'm sure this season was a little tough for you because of UVa's record but I bet Singletary must have been fun to watch. I like him for his obvious talent but also for the fact that he stuck around for his senior season. He's one of the few guys in the major college basketball conferences who had the numbers but chose to stick around all four years. And I say thanks to him just for that - that I could root for this guy for more than just one or two years and get to know what he's all about.
