Martin Brodeur has been the wall in front of the New Jersey Devils' net for the last two decades. That string is in jeopardy, as it appears he's preparing to take on suitors in free agency.

Darren Dreger, TSN's hockey insider, has reported that Brodeur has hired an agent.

There is still a good chance Brodeur will re-sign with the Devils, and the two sides have had preliminary discussions. However, the move to hire an agent could tilt his intentions to weigh options.

There are several NHL teams that are in the market for a goalie. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals could all use an upgrade between the pipes.

The San Jose Sharks could use a challenger to Antti Niemi, whose four-year, $12.5 million contract should leave room for a player of Brodeur's class.

It is possible that Brodeur recognizes this is his last chance to sign a big contract, and saw hiring an agent as the best way to gain leverage over the Devils.

While some analysts are quick to see it as a sign he plans to leave, it seems more likely he will do everything he can to finish his career in New Jersey.

The Devils would certainly welcome him back. After the season, Devils President and GM Lou Lamoriello said they would like Brodeur back.

I've said it all along. He'll make the decision whether he wants to come back. Marty will be a Devil as long as he wants to be. I don't think there's ever something he and I have trouble with. I don't want to see him put on any other uniform. I don't think he wants to.

It is too early for New Jersey fans to read too much into the report. However, the Devils need to be looking to the future.

The team has Jeff Frazee, Scott Wedgewood, Maxime Clermont, Keith Kinkaid and Timo Pielmeier in their ranks, but none of them appear to be quality prospects.

Brodeur will likely be their present, but they need to find an option to groom under him.
