London 2012: Why Andrew Albicy Is the Player to Watch in Basketball Right Now

Admit it. When you saw Andrew Albicy in the headline, your first thought was, "Who?"

Albicy is a 22-year-old French point guard who stands just 5’10”.

He was the MVP of the 2010 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. He played in both the 2010 Worlds and 2011 Eurobasket.

Currently, he plays in the Serie A—the top-level French league—for Club EuroBasket-bound BCM Gravelines, where he averaged 12 points and four dishes a game last season. He also brought a strong defensive presence and above-average stats in speed, athleticism and leadership.

For months, I had been predicting that Albicy would make a splash at the 2012 Olympics. Being drafted by an NBA team is also not impossible.

Albicy was likely slated to be the backup point guard on the French national team—between he, combo guard Rodrigue Beaubois and a little-used combo guard Steed Tchicamboud.

To put it another way, Albicy was one shard of glass away from being the starting point guard on a team that’s a contender—and a team that is slated to play the United States in the tournament.

That shard of glass is in Tony Parker’s eye, putting his Olympic performance in question.

Andrew Albicy is definitely the man to watch for the French national team, and likely one of the top ten non-American players to watch.
