Jeff Gordon Takes Victory In First Qualifying Race

Mike JonesCorrespondent IFebruary 12, 2009

In Thursday's first Gatorade Duel qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway, Jeff Gordon won his first race in over a year.

Gordon beat Tony Stewart to the line, who raced his way into Sunday's Daytona 500 for his newly formed Stewart-Haas racing team.

Rounding out the top five was three-time defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, JGR's Joey Logano and EGR's Aric Almirola.

Kurt Busch recovered from an early spin off of turn four after near contact with Robby Gordon to bring home the No. 2 in sixth place.

The second transfer spot went to Scott Riggs who finished eighth. Riggs is driving for former Daytona 500-winning crew chief Tommy Baldwin, barely a month after Baldwin put the team together.
