It was 2007, Matt Serra had just upset Georges St. Pierre to win the UFC welterweight belt, and Matt Hughes dominated Chris Lytle to become the No. 1 contender.
They were set to coach opposite teams on season six of the Ultimate Fighter. During the show you could see the tension build between the two.
The stage was set, Dec. 29, Matt Hughes was to fight Matt Serra for the belt. Three weeks before the fight Matt Serra suffered a herniated disc in his lower back, and Georges St. Pierre stepped up to replace him. St Pierre beat Hughes to win the interim belt.
Serra returned to action on Apr. 19, losing to St. Pierre via TKO in the second round. Matt Hughes was knocked out by Thiago Alves.
Now they are set to fight on May 23. This fight could determine the careers of both these athletes.
