Arsenal captain Robin van Persie’s potential move has been dominating headlines recently. But what most fans don’t know is that van Persie’s best friend and teammate, Thomas Vermaelen, is also being scouted.

According to Mirror Football, Barcelona’s new boss, Tito Vilanova, has been compiling a hit list of Premier League players that he wants to make into Barca boys, and Arsenal’s Vermaelen is at the top of the list. After failing to sign AC Milan’s Thiago Silva, Barcelona is desperate to sign a big defensive power, and Vermaelen fits that bill.

If that isn’t bad enough, Vermaelen was recently seen partying with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol at a restaurant in Ibiza, and he even posed for a picture.

Seeing the Arsenal defensive back talking with another team is bad, but what makes this potential move particularly noteworthy is the fact that it’s Barcelona. Arsene Wenger has seen the likes of Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars move to the dark, Catalan side, so there is bound to be some apprehension with Vermalean.

Despite Barcelona’s push for Vermaelen, Arsenal fans should sleep soundly at night, because there is no way Arsenal will let him go.

The Belgium native is a very versatile player because of his ability to play left-back and midfield, but his quick feet is what makes him extremely valuable. His commanding aerial presence (a surprising quality considering his height) and durability on the field make him a critical leader for Arsenal—certainly not a player that the Gunners want to lose.

Although he has been struggling with a groin injury as of late, Vermaelen is still a strong asset for the Gunners.

Arsenal will also welcome two amazing offensive talents—Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski—which should help improve the Gunners’ third-place finish in the EPL. With power players like that, who are sure to bring in more victories, who in their right mind would want to leave?

It would be completely ridiculous for Vermaelen to leave Arsenal for Barcelona, or any other club for that matter, and it seems as if the Belgian realizes that too. After all, he was recently quoted as saying that he wants to stay at the North London club “forever.”
