Just a few days ago, the Valentine’s Day of Alfredo Angulo did not look so rosy. The undefeated 154 lb. boxer with an extensive amateur background was without an opponen after his scheduled fight with Ricardo Mayorga collapsed overnight for mysterious reasons.

Then, promoter Gary Shaw lined up Danny Perez as a possible suitor to fight on the 14th. Perez also pulled out at the last minute for reasons that are not clear.

Still, Gary Shaw was able to find a matchup for Angulo —Cosme Rivera.

Rivera is a former welterweight contender whose most recent claim to fame was knocking down Andre Berto in the sixth round of a fight he lost on the scorecards in 2007.

Rivera has also faced former contender Zab Judah. He will bring a lot of experience and a never-back-down style when he faces Angulo.

Professional experience is one thing Alfredo Angulo, whose pro record is only 14-0, lacks. Cosme Rivera who is 31-11-2, deserves some credit for taking this fight on short notice.

Gary Shaw did an amazing job finding two opponents at the last minute for Angulo. In a recent interview following the Arce vs. Darchiniyan battle, Angulo emphasized that he has been able to remain focused despite the musical chairs regarding possible opponents.

The other fights on the HBO card were never in jeopardy, and will feature Nate Campbell vs. Ali Funeka and Sergio Martinez vs. Kermit Cintron.

The action this Saturday will be featured in a live HBO broadcast from the Bank Atlantic Center in Florida.
