Bobby Frasor Is Not a Fir Tree

I cringe every time I hear an announcer mispronounce the name of Bobby Frasor. Though the spelling of his last name is similar to that of the Fraser fir (think Christmas trees here), they do not sound the same.

Frasor is pronounced FRAY-zer. Even Tar Heel Blue, The University of North Carolina Tar Heels Official Athletic Site, provides a pronunciation key at the bottom of Frasor’s bio page. It offers the helpful hint that his last name rhymes with the word “razor.”

The senior guard was out for much of the 2007-08 season due to a torn ligament. This season, Frasor has already played 345 minutes to his last season’s 195 minutes. Perhaps the time out last year due to injury made the announcers a little forgetful with his name. Now is the time to correct it.

I was constantly yelling at my television screen during the Feb. 7 North Carolina versus Virginia game because I kept hearing “FRAY-sher, FRAY-sher.” This Wednesday, I can’t be yelling about Frasor’s name because I will be too busy booing Duke.

It is common courtesy to pronounce someone’s name correctly. In school, even a substitute teacher apologizes in advance for any name butchering while going down the roll and then asks for the proper pronunciation.

So announcers: now you have the proper pronunciation. Please get it right the rest of the season. One last time, repeat after me: FRAY-zer.
