DC United had a poor 2008, but they are still the most successful side in MLS history. In the last 14 seasons, they have captured two US Open Cups and they hold the league record for most Supporters Shields (four) and MLS Cups (four).
They also won the CONCACAF Champions League in 1998. They are easily the most consistently dominant team in the league.
Their historic run of titles is a product of the great players who have taken the pitch for the Black and Red. Jaime Moreno has been the team’s heart and soul, scoring 121 goals (an MLS record) in 279 games. They have also fielded Freddy Adu, Marco Etcheverry, Bobby Convey, Roy Lassiter, John Harkes, Earnie Stewart, and Jeff Agoos—just to name a few.
DCU has also been assisted by some of the league’s most devoted fans and they typically finish near the top of the table in average attendance. Their home venue, RFK Stadium, is not exactly ideal for soccer though so the franchise has proposed building a new soccer specific stadium in Poplar Point for a cool $150 million.
Despite their poor league record in 2008, United did manage to capture their second US Open Cup. They will probably be the first franchise to eclipse the 200 win mark, though that likely won’t happen until 2010. I think they will rebound in 2009 and rejoin the ranks of the best MLS teams. Like they say, history repeats itself.
