Is Michigan a Legit National Title Contender?
The Michigan Wolverines are the pick of many experts to win the Big Ten in 2012. Certainly the schedule for Brady Hoke’s team features a big-boy game against Alabama, but the rest of the eleven regular season dates should make Wolverine fans at least think about 11-1 as a possibility. Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Nebraska will be tough dates but none of them has an air of impossibility about them.
While Michigan will not be one of the six or seven best teams in the country, they just need to be the last team standing with one loss come season’s end as teams like LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Arkansas cannibalize themselves in the SEC. The same can be said for Oregon and USC in the Pac-12, a possible rematch in the Pac-12 title game could leave both the Trojans and Ducks wounded and out of luck.
It isn’t likely, but given the landscape the Wolverines could most certainly be in the mix if the ball bounces the right way for them in 2012.
