Johan Santana Will Not Pitch In World Baseball Classic

Phil HoopsCorrespondent IFebruary 9, 2009

The Daily News is reporting that Johan Santana, under the instruction of the New York Mets' training staff, has withdrawn himself from consideration to play in the World Baseball Classic.

Santana, who was slated to pitch for his native Venezuela, will instead remain in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with the Mets and gear up for a crucial 2009 campaign.

From a Mets fan’s perspective, it is hard to disagree with the decision to forbid Santana from pitching in the Classic, as he has yet to throw off a mound since his knee surgery in October.
