13 NHL Teams Most Due for a Uniform Change
Die-hard NHL fans take pride in their team's uniform. Many of these jerseys are among the most attractive in professional sports.
I realize that certain teams have uniforms that are full of history, making it difficult to alter them. But the fact remains: Some teams need a uniform change.
This slideshow looks at 13 teams that could benefit from a new look.
The Coyotes introduced their current uniforms in 2007. The uniform currently sports a howling desert dog on the front. If the Coyotes were to change their uniforms, it would be wise to choose something that is both vibrant and more aggressive.
Though the Coyotes' future is currently up in the air, it wouldn't be a bad idea to give the franchise a completely new look. I am no graphic-design expert, but a team with an animal in its team name should have that on its uniform.
Like the Phoenix Coyotes, the Colorado Avalanche have sported their current look since the beginning of the 2007–08 season.
I think it would be interesting for the Avalanche to center their uniform around the logo featuring the team's popular nickname. The Tampa Bay Lightning had a uniform displaying “Bolts,” so why can't the Avalanche do something similar?
The Avalanche's current color scheme features blue, purple, black and white. No one is saying they should drastically change the team's look, but they are one of the teams in the NHL sporting a five-year-old jersey.
The Avalanche have a solid core of young players. It would only be fitting to debut a new uniform to signal the start of a new era for the Colorado franchise.
The Boston Bruins, an Original Six franchise in the NHL, have worn their current uniforms for the past five seasons. The Bruins' spoked-wheel with a “B” in the middle is a trademark of the franchise.
The Bruins' home uniform has a black base with yellow striping complemented by white near the shoulder blades. The Bruins' Winter Classic sweater from 2008 featured a yellow base with black and cream striping. This jersey would be a refreshing change because of its popularity.
The Bruins would still be able to wear their white jerseys on the road. They are indisputedly a classic franchise, but their jersey could use a new look.
There is nothing wrong with the current jersey, but it is one of the older jerseys in circulation.
The Dallas Stars are in dire need of a uniform change. Their current uniforms feature "DALLAS" across the chest, with a Stars' logo on the shoulders. The Stars would be wise to sport a jersey featuring a new logo.
The Stars were recently bought and have a new owner. So it would only be fitting for their new owner to put his trademark on the team with a new logo and uniform design. The Stars are a franchise that deserves a new look.
This website features multiple fan-made designs. The designs are a lot more attractive than what the Stars are currently wearing.
The Chicago Blackhawks, another Original Six organization, have an iconic look. However, they are a team that needs to update its main jersey color and logo. At the Winter Classic, the Blackhawks wore a black jersey with an old-fashioned logo.
Wouldn't it be cool for the 'Hawks to sport a sweater like this (pictured above)? There away jersey would still feature white, but the Blackhawks could consider dropping the home red sweaters. This fan-made design would do the Blackhawks proud.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could go in a new direction with their uniform by combining their current look with a past design. During the Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr years, the Penguins wore this.
This new change would update the team's look and would represent the team's current stars and the stars of the past.
The Carolina Hurricanes have worn their current uniforms since 2007. The team debuted a new “Black Flag” look during the 2008-09 season. This logo was a nice step forward. It gave the team a new look and it was something different.
The Hurricanes are looking to spend money on key free agents this offseason. If the Hurricanes were to change their look, they could change the perception of their team.
Right now, the Hurricanes wear a red jersey at home and a white jersey on the road with a Hurricane logo. The Hurricanes would be wise to change things up to give their team a new look.
St. Louis Blues
The St. Louis Blues are a team that is coming off a solid 2011-12 season. They are a team on the rise and are a team that needs to upgrade its uniform.
The Blues currently sport a sweater with a musical note with gold outline on a blue home jersey and a white away jersey. While there is nothing wrong with this logo, the Blues could opt for a new look.
The franchise could conceivably sport a jersey featuring “Blues” on the chest like the Tampa Bay Lightning featured "Bolts" on an alternate jersey.
The Blues are a team on its way to becoming a powerhouse in the Western Conference, so a new jersey would symbolize their rise to the top.
The Minnesota Wild have an interesting uniform. Their home and away uniforms feature different logos. The home uniform has a circular logo with text surrounding the main logo. The away logo is the Wild's official logo.
The Wild are a team that needs to change its uniform scheme. They could feature the “animal” in the background of their main logo. The animal in question is not defined like Florida's "Panther" or Anaheim's "Duck."
If the Wild ever define this figure, they could feature it on their next uniform design.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets are a team that needs to change its perception, on-ice personnel and appearance. They unveiled an alternate uniform in 2010 that received mixed reviews because of its similarity to the Florida Panthers' own alternate jersey.
If the Blue Jackets indeed trade Rick Nash this summer, it would be wise to re-brand and re-tool in the same offseason. The Blue Jackets could copy the color scheme from the alternate jersey and apply a new logo, if they so choose.
They are definitely a team that should consider updating its uniform.
The Washington Capitals are a team that unveiled an alternate jersey recently that was widely popular. The franchise recently brought back the red, white and blue color scheme and abandoned the former gold and brown design.
The Capitals' away jersey is perfectly fine. However, their home jersey could use a makeover. It has been suggested on fan sites that the Capitals should sport a blue home jersey with a different logo.
The above design was well done and one that the fans would appreciate. The Capitals will hire a new head coach this offseason, but that is not the only change that they should consider.
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are a franchise that has not changed its logo since its inception. The Devils should consider transforming their current “NJ” logo. The Devils could possibly have “Devils” typographically across the chest in combination with a "Jersey Devil."
The team's name is based on the mythical Jersey Devil, but they do not incorporate it in team merchandise. If they ever decided to revamp their uniforms, utilizing the mythical "Jersey Devil" would be a huge plus.
The Buffalo Sabres recently dropped the "Buffa-Slug" logo from their sweaters and reintroduced the classic Sabres shield.
When Dominik Hasek was tending the crease, the Sabres sported a fierce logo with a Buffalo charging with horns.
This fan-made design combines the current logo and infuses it with the "charging buffalo" logo. This design would be stylish and fierce.
