So there’s a whole lot of talk going around about Anquan Boldin. He was the second best receiver on one of the most prolific offenses in 2008. He has two 100+ catch seasons and two others with 80+, including 89 for 1038 yards, a career-high 11 touchdowns and one very nasty broken face in 2008.
He was the offensive rookie of the year. He’s made three Pro Bowls. He leads all NFL receivers—all time—with 81.2 receiving yards per game. (Are you as shocked by that as I am? 81.2 yards receiving per game is the best in NFL history? It’s true. Jerry Rice averaged only 75.6 per game, sixth best behind Boldin, Torry Holt, Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison.)
The most important thing about Boldin: He wants the hell out of Arizona.
The only problem: He’s under contract for two more years. And though the Bidwells may have rehabilitated their image over the past two years, they are not prone to giving away quality players under contract in below-market deals.
The real problem for Boldin isn’t the Bidwells, though. It’s Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
When Jones gave away first, third, and sixth-round picks to the Lions in exchange for Roy Williams, Arizona had their baseline for negotiations with any team looking to acquire Boldin.
And when Jones gave Williams a six-year, $54 million extension, Boldin had his baseline for contract demands.
So the Bidwells are going to go to interested teams and demand a draft haul to trade Boldin. And, if a team is willing to pay that kind of price, they will then be faced with Boldin, still unwilling to play out his deal for $2.75 million next year and $3 million in 2010.
Does anybody really see this happening? The only team you could possibly see making that kind of deal just did it when the Cowboys acquired Williams.
Beside them, who?
Washington offered Cincinnati two first-rounders for Chad Johnson last year, but that was before they drafted Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly in the second round last April. Plus, they still have Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El signed through 2013 (give or take a few voidable years).
Kansas City? The last time we saw Boldin and Todd Haley come together, it was with less-than-friendly intentions. Plus, there’s no way Scott Pioli is gutting his first draft for a wide receiver.
You can count out the Dolphins, Patriots and Colts because there’s no way Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick or Bill Polian would every spend those kind of draft choices in a trade. It’s “buy low,” not “buy at the absolutely most expensive point possible.”
The Falcons have Roddy White coming up as an unrestricted FA after next season.
