Belmont Stakes 2012 Live Blog: Reaction to the Race, Results and Analysis
I'll Have Another won't be claiming another victory—or even another spot in a race. With the hot horse pulled out of the Belmont Stakes due to injury on Friday, there will be no Triple Crown winner for at least another year.
That doesn't mean there is nothing to tune in for at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, though.
Know as the "Test of the Champion," the Belmont has traditions all its own. There is the legendary 300-year-old white pine, the official drink known as the Belmont Breeze as well as its grueling mile-and-a-half-long track.
The winner is draped in a blanket of carnations, and there are still quite a few worthy contenders. While many were looking forward to I'll Have Another's run to history, stay tuned to see a new hero rise this afternoon.
I just want to thank anyone who stuck around and followed the race with me. I appreciate the company and I had a great time covering horse racing for the first time. Hopefully I get to do some more of it here at Bleacher Report. Anyone interested in tennis, I'll be live blogging the men's French Open final tomorrow morning. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Well I'll Have Another wasn't around to run for the Triple Crown but it still proved to be a fun and exciting race. Union Rags proved that the hype wasn't unwarranted and Paynter proved that Bob Baffert just had the worst of this year.
Almost hit my superfecta. I had Union Rags, Paynter, My Adonis and Street Life. Everything was right except My Adonis. Atigun snuck in to show.
Here are the payouts:
| No. | HORSE | WIN | PLACE | SHOW |

| 4 | Atigun | 10.60 |
$1 DAILY DOUBLE Paid: $24.20 4-3
$1 EXACTA Paid: $15.70 3-9
$1 PICK 3 Paid: $96.00 6-4-3
$1 PICK 4 Paid: $641.50 1-6-4-3

$1 TRIFECTA Paid: $248.00 3-9-4
Velazquez ran a great race. Stayed on the pace but didn't push too hard. He got the rail before the home stretch and just ran Paynter down from the inside.
There was no Triple Crown story today but wow, all three races have had thrilling finishes!
I'll have final standings and payouts as soon as possible.
What a finish! Union Rags with a great run, Paynter almost held him off!! I believe Atigun showed today.
Union Rags runs down Paynter!!! Bob Baffert comes in second for the third consecutive time!
Into the stretch, still Paynter!!
Dullahan is near the back, Paynter still leading, Unstoppable U and Optimizer second and third!
Paynter out to the early lead and Union Rags got a much, much better start today.
They're off!!!
We are almost ready to go!
It feels inappropriate for an announcer to refer to any animal as a "sweater." It just sounds wrong.
This is such a hard race to predict because none of these horses have run this far, something out of the ordinary almost always happens here and how are you supposed to know which underdog will be the one? My Adonis is my long shot prediction, but Union Rags is still my pick.
My Adonis has some fancy wraps on his hind legs. I think he will be a factor in this race. He's dressed for success.
Guyana Star Dweej is an amazing name.
I keep seeing and hearing that Union Rags "finds" trouble. What type of trouble will he find today?
I love Sinatra but I feel like playing "New York, New York" is a little self indulgent.
Ravelo's boy just got caught on television in mid bowel movement. Nice. You won't see that in human sports.
As an Eagles fan I'm thrilled to be treated to Tom Coughlin. Oh well, it is in New York.
The NBC Race Preview has Dullahan winning. Also the thought is that Paynter will get out to the lead and hold it until the stretch. That must be Bob Baffert's specialty this year because Bodemeister did that twice already.
I'm ready for this race. I know it isn't the most hyped of the Triple Crown races but the extra distance makes it intriguing to me. It's like a boxer who knocks people out in the first three or four rounds. You find out what he's really made of when a fight goes the distance. I think winning the Belmont is the most impressive.
I do like the idea that we find out today if Union Rags is for real. I'm concerned that he's like the Dallas Cowboys of horse racing. Everyone always hypes the Cowboys up and they never do anything. Is that Union Rags?
